Work is proving to be very challenging (translation frustrating, sucky, deflating, irritating, and overwhelming) this week. Please e-mail words of encouragement and funny jokes to help me make it through Friday. Puns are especially appreciated. I am simple that way.
Too much to Say….. May 7, 2007
…..and too little time.
My Mom was here from Thursday to very early this morning. I look forward to her visit for weeks and then she gets here and I am suddenly anxious and uptight. Not wanting her stay to last much longer but not wanting her to leave either. Why is this? Regardless, we have already spoken since her return to WNY and she sounded sincere when saying that she had a wonderful time and I hope that is true.
My mom brought with her a sizable stack of clothes belonging to yours truly from way back when. They span the age of newborn to about 8 years old. A good portion of them were items that she had made herself. She told me that she had come across an old suitcase which she was planning to toss but realized that it was not empty. It was full of clothes that she set aside for her future grandchild. BTW – I am not pregnant. Just wanted to clear that up right now. Anyway, I am so grateful that she set these things aside. There is one outfit in particular that she made that is so unbelievably cute. A little pink polka-dot dress with daisy trim and a matching pink overcoat with pearlized heart buttons. She made it herself. How impressive is that? There is another little dress – also made by Mom – that I distinctly recall my Mom asking me, at the omniscient age of 8, if I wanted to keep it for my future daughter. I thought she was insane. Was she crazy? Of course I didn’t want it. What 8 year old has that kind of foresight? Well – she may have been a bit crazy to ask me the question but she wasn’t crazy enough to listen to me when I said “No, it can go to the Goodwill.” It is in the stack that she brought to me this weekend. And I love it. And I hope someday to have a little girl to pass it on to, too.
While my Mom was here we bought the makings of a mini herb garden. I planted that today after Randy and I planted the hydrangeas we bought for the back yard. I have always wanted hydrangeas and now I finally have multiple shady areas in which to put them. We have two small red stars, an endless summer (blue) and a blushing bride (blooms white and turns a subtle pink). It will be interesting to see if they bloom the colors that were described or if the acidity of our soil messes with them. Wow. That sounded really geeky. Go me.
Yesterday we went to the Atlanta Botanical Garden. It was absolutely gorgeous. I took a bazillion pictures and should have them posted on Flickr soon. The hydrangea collection was getting ready to burst and should be absolutely stunning in a couple of weeks. Hence the trip to Home Depot to get some of our own.
On a completely different note: My friend Katherine and her fiance, Mark, met with their photographer for an engagement photo session. She was gracious enough to share the link to the pictures with me and allow me to share them with you. The photographer did an incredible job of capturing Mark and Katherine on film. If these pictures are any indication of what he will do with their wedding, they are going to have a stunning album by which to remember their special day. I have never seen my friend Katherine with such a sense of serenity and happiness. I am truly happy for both she and Mark. By the way, Katherine and Mark have started a blog of their own.
Peach Pie – It’s not just for dessert anymore. May 4, 2007
I bought a peach pie from Kroger on Monday, taking a gamble that the store bought dessert might be nothing more than canned pie filling in a ready-made crust. Well, as is often the case, I ate too much at dinner and felt that dessert would have put me over the edge. So Wednesday morning when I noticed that Randy was not forgoing dessert, I decided to have my share for breakfast. Nutritional tomfoolery? Perhaps. But any worse than a fruit pastry that is considered commonly acceptable breakfast fare? I think not. So – the pie? Kroger scored big – it was delicious! The peaches were not the mushy canned variety and the crust was PDG too. And I actually looked forward to getting out of bed yesterday knowing that there was another sliver available for breakfast. Yesterday I picked up another at Publix hoping for an even better pie since Publix bakery is considered by many to be superior to Kroger. The Publix pie was far inferior but don’t think for a second that it stopped me from making it 3 days in a row.
P.S. Kroger-1 Publix-0
Work in progress May 2, 2007
Since making the switch to WordPress, I have not had the time / patience to get this blog up to true PPR standards. Given, I am not sure exactly what those standards are but I know that my presentation is *so far* falling short. But I am working on it and ask you to pardon the hiccups, goofs, and weird changes to format. I know – I am so demanding.
The Tin Man May 2, 2007
Since our first visit to Kurt and Chrissy’s house, we have admired the tin tile artwork they have on their wall from the “Tin Man.” This past weekend we acquired a couple Tin Man pieces to call our own at the Inman Park Festival. Tres exciting. Almost as exciting is the fact that we were able to hang them without the usual barrage of curses that usually accompanies power tool projects.
“%$#@! How can that be crooked!? I measured it eight times!” Perhaps you can relate.
Radio Free Info May 1, 2007
FM Radio is pretty poor in all of the big cities I have lived in and Atlanta is no exception. But I do find 92.9 Dave FM tolerable and am a big fan of their mid-day DJ, Mara Davis.
So right now, Dave FM is in the midst of counting down their Top 30 Rock albums of the last 30 years. Each day they announce one album, play songs from it throughout the day and then play it in its entirety at 7pm. I find it interesting that the ranking is a result of their listeners; however, a lot of the music that ends up in the count down is rarely – if ever – heard outside of this promotion. But I digress, I share this with you because I look forward to the announcement on my drive to work each morning and I thought you might enjoy the mental picture of me rocking out in the Vibe this morning to ACDC / Back in Black.
And another thing: Sully, the rush hour DJ on Dave shared this interesting little tidbit: The Indigo Girls lost the Best New Artist Grammy to Milli Vanilli in 1989. Is that sad or what?!
