Our first cars. August 14, 2007

One of the Dads at work, when asked how the first day of school went, mentioned that his daughter was complaining that she is the only Senior she knows who still takes the bus to school.  This got us all reminiscing about our first cars.  I actually didn’t have a car until after I graduated from High School.  But Steph and Sara did and they were stories in and of themselves.  Sara inherited a Ford Fairmont from her Grandparents.  It was rust orange with red velour seating.  (Insert 70s boom chicky wah waaaaaah sound effect here.)  I shared this with Sara via e-mail today and she said “You forgot to mention that the orange Fairmont with the red interior also had a hole in the floor which would occasionally result in the driver being sprayed in the face by dirty puddle water.”  I think that the only reason I forgot about this feature is that I was spared the spray.  Otherwise I definitely would have remembered that!

Stephanie’s Dad bought a Plymouth Volare Station Wagon that looked a lot like this one – complete with faux wood panel – from some guy passing through Springville wanting to unload the car.  (Steph – you may have to clear up if I am remembering wrong here.)  It had this neat feature where if you turned the wheel too far in one direction, it would trip the horn.  And the horn didn’t necessarily stop blaring when you turned the wheel the other way.  Sweet car.  We used to sing to Steph, “the Looooooooooove Volare, soon we’ll be making anooooother run.”  At the time she would get pretty mad but we all can laugh about it now.

When I graduated from HS, my brother gave me the keys to his 1984 Nissan Pick-up.  It looked a lot like the one shown here but it was powder blue.  The nice feature on mine was that it backfired almost every time you pushed in the clutch.  So we drove it around town intentionally revving out 2nd gear and shifting into 3rd right next to pedestrians on the sidewalk.  Yes, we were mature.  And bored.

I didn’t have one until I was a junior in college. I started college really young, so I looked like a complete dork having my dad pick me up after classes every day. In HS that’s expected, but not cool in college.

Then I finally got my wheels – a horrible Hyundai Excel that didn’t have enough power to even go up hills. Thankfully Orlando isn’t that treacherous of a terrain.

you forgot the blinking lights on top that looked like eyes staring at you! I had that car from junior year of HS until the start of junior year of college. At the end, it wouldn’t even start by itself and I had to call AAA to jump it. They finally told me that they couldn’t keep coming out to start my car just so I could go to Wegmans or the bars. I knew that was the beginning of the end!
