Yesterday I had my 2nd official visit to the doctor as an expecting Mom.  At one point I was considering changing to a new OB/GYN who is affiliated with Dekalb Medical Center as it is much closer to our abode than Piedmont hospital.  Out of laziness and a bit of fear for the yet to be named doctor, I decided to stick with Dr. Kleiss at Piedmont.  I am so glad I did.  She has such a nice way about her – very knowledgeable and down to earth.

I had to wait for her a little while yesterday as one of her patients had gone into Labor just before my scheduled appointment.  How could I mind?  I very well could be the patient making her late for her appointments come January.  I don’t know a whole lot about labor and delivery but I do know this:  You can not say to a woman on the verge of delivery, “Could you hold off on labor until lunchtime?  Or how about 5:00? That would be more convenient for me.”

Anyway, I got to hear the heartbeat yesterday which was so cool on many levels.  At 6 weeks I saw the heartbeat as a little collection of pulsating fuzz on the ultrasound screen.  Hearing it was somehow so much more real.  And it was going so fast!  I really don’t feel pregnant – yet anyway – so it was very reassuring to hear the heartbeat of the little person in my belly.

So what is next?  I go back in 4 weeks and then in another 4 weeks at which point we can find out if we are having a boy or a girl.  Can you tell I am just a little bit excited?

Nickel Goes Prime Time June 25, 2007

Ladies and gentlemen, my geekdom is official.  I used the movie mode on my camera to capture the spazz that is Nickel, created a You Tube account, and here you see my first official video.  Listen closely – he growls!  I realize that the entertainment level does not quite warrant the length of the video but I haven’t figured out how to edit yet.  I’ll work on it.

The Police are coming! June 23, 2007

Filed under: music — penelopepr @ 2:31 pm

I have always been a fan of the Police and Sting.  I remember in middle school listening to  Synchronicity incessantly and thinking the most exciting part of the movie Dune was Sting’s brief appearance.  So, earlier this week when they announced an Atlanta date for their world tour, Randy and I agreed we would try and get tickets.  I debated as to whether it was worth it / necessary to go to a Ticketmaster outlet rather than taking my chances with our computer and ticketmaster.com.  So tickets went on sale 20 minutes ago at which point I was watering on the back porch.  Something clicked in my head, I remembered where I was supposed to be.  I literally dropped the hose, ran into the house, nearly decapitating Chops as he tried to dart out the door, glanced at the clock on the microwave, (it said 10:00 – Phew!) ran into the computer room, logged onto Ticketmaster (they should be called Ticketscammer but we all know that), and had seats  7 minutes after.  Not great seats – but there were definitely worse seats to be had.  Like the ones behind the stage I saw when I checked back a few minutes later just to see what it would pull up.

So – YAY – I will finally get to see them.  Never mind that I will be 7 months pregnant.  I may never get this chance again.

We feel healthier already. June 22, 2007

Lisa came over tonight and made a great meal using mostly the veggies from our weekly veggie delivery through the Oakhurst Community garden.  Fortunately she took charge in the kitchen because I had a long/late day.  We had roasted beets with balsamic vinegar and feta, fresh yummy tomato with basil and balsamic vinegar, sauteed turnip greens, steamed green beans and squash, green salad with basil English cuke and green onion, garlic bread from candler market, and pork chops.  We were so enthralled with the veggies that between the three of us we didn’t finish one whole pork chop.

So – many thanks to Lisa.  If it weren’t for her most of the above items would be rotting in our veggie drawer.  And we wouldn’t have had kick-ass chocolate birthday cake two nights in a row either!

My New Love June 19, 2007

Last weekend I happened upon Sister Schubert’s Cinnamon Rolls in the frozen food section of Kroger.  Jane, Randy, and I devoured all but two rolls in no time flat.  Now I never want to be without them  Toss them in the oven for 35 minutes and you have yourself a little pan of heaven.  Trust me.

Information Overload June 13, 2007

Filed under: New Mom — penelopepr @ 1:39 am

When I first found out I was pregnant, I felt the need to read read read.  I ordered a few books from Amazon (Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy, Nutrition for Pregnancy, and a name book too).  Chrissy also gave me the Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy which is by far much more interesting and “real” than anything I picked out.  But I quickly found out that there is such a thing as Too Much Information and I haven’t touched any of those books (other than to confirm the latest pregnancy side effect was perfectly normal) in a couple of weeks.  On Friday, Randy and I received an unexpected package from my Step-mom.  Donna sent us the Little Big Book of Pregnancy.  What a refreshing change!  Like the other books, it has practical information but it also contains a lot of literary excerpts, poems, and pregnancy traditions from around the world.  Finally, a book that doesn’t pile on the worry factor.  Mind candy for the Information Overloaded.  And it has all old illustrations that make you feel like you are back in a simpler, more innocent era.  So if you know of someone who just found out they are pregnant and want to pick them up a little something, I highly recommend this book.  Click here to see a random page of the book, compliments of Amazon.

OK – the next post will have nothing to do with pregnancy.  Promise.

Updating the links June 12, 2007

I was headed into the bedroom to get some quality reading time in when I decided I would give my blog some much needed attention.  I really like my blog even if I alone count for 25% of the readership.  But I was reminded again tonight of why I don’t update it more often.  MY COMPUTER IS SO UNBELIEVABLY SLOW.  It just took me 20 minutes to update my Reading and Listening to links.  No wonder I avoid the computer at home.

Anyway, in addition to updating the aforementioned links, I added a few items to the  Dig  and Not So Much lists.  I felt that I should remove Red Wine and Diet Coke from my list before anyone thinks I am a horrible Mom-to-be.  For the record, I still love them both but am not partaking these days.  One of the many reasons the countdown to January is on…….

Saltines were already on the list, not a recent addition due to being with child.  Fortunately, I haven’t had to rely on them as it appears I have been spared the Morning Sickness nightmare.  So far anyway.  Several people have told me that if it hasn’t happened by now I am probably out of the woods.  I hope they are right.

On a completely separate note, I touched base with my long lost friend Abe today.  I think it has been at least two years since we had exchanged as much as an e-mail.  We picked right up with the inside jokes as if we had just talked last week.  Don’t you just love the people in your life like that?  He and his wife Ashley are doing well and are expecting Baby Boy Dewing in September.  Re-connecting with Abe (Frohman, you know, the Sausage King of Chicago) was the highlight of my day.  Followed closely by the fact that it actually rained today.  Now we just hope and pray that the surrounding trees stand their ground and don’t fall on our house after being waterless for weeks.  Don’t laugh.  It has already happened once on our lot.  Before it was our lot.  Our neighbors all remember it crushing the house that was here before.  Good times good times.  Night all – I am off to read my book.

It turns out I lied. June 6, 2007

So the few readers I have may have noticed the lack of activity on PPR as of late.  Well, I have to admit that I have been a tad preoccupied lately.

“Preoccupied?!” you say?

OK then.  How about “Pregnant?”   Does pregnant explain it any better?  I thought it might.

I honestly didn’t know this when I posted on May 7th.  So I lied.  But I didn’t know that I was lying.  So maybe there is a more appropriate word for this too?  I found out two days later.  And I know it is still a tad early to be blabbing this but the majority of my readers already know.  And for those who are finding out about this for the first time via PPR – I wish I could see the expression on your face.
